Tensions in Bawku have intensified as unidentified youth on Thursday, April 10, 2025, vandalized and partially set fire to the private residence of Bawku Central MP and Majority Leader, Mahama Ayariga.

The act of arson comes amid escalating unrest in the town, largely fueled by the protracted chieftaincy dispute between rival factions.

Security forces, including military personnel, swiftly intervened and have since taken control of key locations to prevent further violence. Military presence around Mahama Ayariga’s residence has been heightened following the incident.

This attack follows a violent clash on Wednesday between youth groups and law enforcement that left one person dead and multiple others injured. Reports indicate that the confrontation was sparked when youth from one side of the conflict attempted to force market women from a rival faction to leave the area, prompting police intervention and a subsequent exchange of fire.

The destruction of Mahama Ayariga’s home adds to the growing list of affected properties in the area. Just a day earlier, the private residence of the Bawku Divisional Police Commander was also set ablaze, along with a police vehicle.
