The Coalition of Unemployed Trained Teachers has rejected the Education Minister Haruna Iddrisu’s announcement of 6,100 new teacher recruitments, describing the plan as inadequate and disappointing.
In a statement issued on Thursday, November 20, the group, representing more than 17,000 unemployed College of Education graduates, said the announcement has increased anxiety among qualified graduates who remain without jobs. They insisted that all trained teachers deserve placement, not just a limited number.
The coalition, which staged a peaceful protest on Wednesday, November 19, demanded mass recruitment of all 2023 College of Education graduates. They criticised the Minister’s announcement for lacking clear criteria and a transparent roadmap.
The group questioned whether the recruitment will follow a fair protocol or “rough tactics” that could sideline many deserving graduates. They described the current situation as unprecedented in Ghana’s teacher training history, with thousands of graduates left in uncertainty.
According to the coalition, every qualified graduate must be given the opportunity to work and contribute to Ghana’s education sector. They also rejected the Minister’s claims that the protestors were “striking teachers,” insisting they are unemployed trained professionals demanding fairness.
The group has warned that they will embark on another major demonstration in two weeks if the Ministry does not provide a clear recruitment roadmap.
