Two personnel of the Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) were shot and severely injured on Sunday night, November 2, 2025, in an ambush at Nagani in the Tempane District of the Upper East Region.
According to sources within the regional command, the officers were returning from night duty on a motorbike when unknown assailants attacked them, opening fire without warning. Both officers sustained life-threatening injuries and were rushed to the Upper East Regional Hospital in Bolgatanga, where they are receiving urgent medical treatment.
While the Ghana Immigration Service is yet to release an official statement, preliminary information indicates that investigations are already underway to identify and apprehend the attackers.
The incident adds to growing concerns over the safety of security personnel working in Ghana’s northern border zones. It follows a similar attack nearly a month ago at the Gbintiri inland checkpoint, where unidentified gunmen killed one GIS officer and critically injured another.
In that earlier attack, AICO II Rafiq Mohammed died instantly, while AICO II Oppong Daniel survived but remains in hospital. Investigators recovered an AK-47 shell and a Ghana Immigration Service rifle with registration number GH/GIS/HQACN 668516-1646 at the scene.
These repeated assaults highlight the escalating security risks faced by border enforcement officers, with increasing calls for better protection, logistics, and intelligence support to safeguard personnel stationed in high-risk areas.
