Two Sudanese players from Asante Kotoko, AbdoelKarem Yagoub and Esmat Abdulhamid, have reportedly absconded from the team’s hotel while on a trip to the United States for a friendly match against Major League Soccer side DC United.
The friendly was part of the annual Capital City Cup, organized by the Ghana Tourism Authority (GTA) and the Ghana Football Association (GFA) as part of the Ghana Week DC 2024 festivities.
Asante Kotoko had been preparing for the match, scheduled for Saturday, October 12, 2024, following their victory over Hearts of Oak in the Democracy Cup. Seven players, including Yagoub and Abdulhamid, had traveled with head coach Dr. Prosper Ogum Narteh, hoping the remaining squad members would secure visas to join the team. However, the club was forced to withdraw from the competition after visa issues prevented the rest of the team from traveling.
In a statement released on Thursday, the club confirmed the withdrawal and announced that the players who had already arrived in the USA would return on Sunday, October 13. However, on Friday night, it was discovered that Yagoub and Abdulhamid were missing from the team’s hotel. The players had earlier requested permission to change money, which was declined by the team officials. CCTV footage later revealed that they had sneaked out of the hotel, and their current whereabouts remain unknown.
Officials of Asante Kotoko in the USA are actively searching for the two players to ensure their safe return.
