A devastating incident unfolded at the foot of Galenku Hill in Ho Bankoe, resulting in the loss of at least 10 lives following a collision between a mini-bus and a refuse compactor. The fatal crash occurred around 4 PM on Tuesday when a mini-bus, bearing registration number GR 1645 W, collided with a heavy-duty truck traveling in the opposite direction.
Eyewitnesses speculated that the mini-bus, descending from the Taviefe direction towards Ho, experienced brake failure, causing it to veer into the path of the oncoming truck. The collision’s impact was severe, throwing the truck off the road and leaving the mini-bus crushed beyond recognition.
Tragically, among the casualties were animals transported atop the mini-van, including sheep and fowls, which also succumbed to the accident. The Ghana National Fire Service faced a challenging 30-minute rescue mission to extricate the trapped truck driver from the wreckage.
The aftermath of the collision painted a harrowing scene, with the deceased scattered along the road. Heart-wrenching moments unfolded as observers witnessed a mother and her infant daughter among the victims, lying lifeless on the ground together.
Emergency services from the National Ambulance Service swiftly responded to transport the deceased and injured to the Ho Teaching Hospital. As the community grapples with the shock and devastation, chaos has gripped the capital of the Volta Region.
Identifying the deceased and injured remains pending, adding to the somber atmosphere following this tragic incident.
