The Greater Accra Regional Minister, Titus Glover, has cautioned residents in the ECOMOG area near the Kwame Nkrumah Interchange in Accra not to rebuild structures affected by a fire that occurred on Wednesday, June 5, 2024.
A devastating blaze tore through the ECOMOG area, reducing numerous wooden structures to ashes. The fire, which started around 4 PM, forced residents to flee, scrambling for safety and salvageable belongings.
The cause of the fire remains unknown, but the rapid spread suggests that the densely packed wooden structures and possibly flammable materials stored within may have intensified the blaze. Local authorities have launched an investigation to determine the fire’s origin.
Following the incident, Regional Minister Titus Glover, speaking to Citi FM, instructed residents not to rebuild in the affected area. He stressed the importance of prioritizing safety, warning of the potential for another fire if rebuilding occurs.
Glover highlighted that the area is a national asset, housing a GRIDCo power transmission line, and warned that anyone found rebuilding or residing there would be doing so at their own risk.
“This is a national asset, with a GRIDCo line transmitting power across the region. Anyone living here does so at their own peril, and we will ensure that everyone is removed from this area,” Glover stated. “We’ve instructed continuous police presence. If we see anybody here, they will be arrested.”
