On the morning of August 31, 2024, a transformer belonging to the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) was discovered vandalized at Asutsuare Junction during a routine patrol.
The 100KVA, 33/0.433KV transformer, valued at GHS75,000, had essential parts removed by thieves, leaving scattered components at the scene.
The ECG officials reported the incident to the Doryumu Police Station. According to Ing. Michael Buabin, the Regional Engineer for ECG’s Tema Region, the theft caused significant inconvenience to customers due to power outages and forced the company to redirect resources meant for other projects into replacing the stolen transformer.
The total cost of replacing the transformer and its components is expected to exceed GHS100,000.
Buabin urged the public to assist ECG by reporting any suspicious activity to the police to prevent future thefts.
