The Teachers and Educational Workers Union (TEWU), under the Trades Union Congress (TUC), has announced an indefinite nationwide strike starting Friday, September 20, 2024.
TEWU has aligned with the Senior Staff Association of Universities of Ghana (SSA-UoG), which began its strike on September 16, over the government’s failure to meet their demands for improved working conditions.
TEWU’s strike stems from the government’s failure to implement agreed-upon benefits, including Vehicle Maintenance and Off-Campus allowances.
Despite an approval letter from the Ministry of Finance dated August 2, 2024, the Controller and Accountant General’s Department (CAGD) has yet to enforce these allowances.
The union also expressed concerns over the government’s failure to pay eight months of Tier Two pension contributions and recalculate interest accrued from delayed Tier Two deductions between 2010 and 2016.
The strike is expected to disrupt activities in public universities across Ghana until these issues are resolved.
