Police in Tamale have arrested 16 suspects in a major special operations crackdown targeting rising violent crimes in the city.
Special Operations Commander, ASP Alhaji Jalil, said the suspects — nine males and seven females — were picked up during a raid at a hideout in Nyohini. The arrests follow a surge in attacks on residents, students, and mobile money vendors.
He highlighted recent incidents including robberies, stabbings, break-ins, and the sale of hard drugs such as “red” and tramadol. The Special Operations Unit was deployed to support the Regional Police Command after civil society groups and opinion leaders petitioned the IGP over the worsening security situation.
ASP Jalil said the team has been gathering intelligence and tracking criminal networks for weeks. The suspects will remain in police custody and be processed for court. He assured residents that the operation will continue until full normalcy is restored in Tamale.
