The Speaker of Ghana’s Parliament, Rt. Hon. Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, has been appointed to the Inter-Parliamentary Union’s (IPU) Task Force on the peaceful resolution of the war in Ukraine.
The appointment, made by the IPU President, acknowledges Speaker Bagbin’s integrity, impartiality, and exceptional ability to foster trust among conflicting parties. He joins seven other distinguished parliamentarians representing the six IPU geopolitical groups.
In a letter confirming the appointment, IPU Secretary General Martin Chungong expressed confidence in Bagbin’s leadership, stating that his experience would greatly enhance the work and impact of the Task Force in its mission to support diplomatic efforts for peace in Ukraine.
Established in March 2022, the IPU Task Force serves as a platform for dialogue between Ukrainian and Russian parliamentarians. Since its creation, the Task Force has held over thirteen meetings, conducted a mission to Kyiv and Moscow in July 2022, and continued biannual consultations during IPU Assemblies.
As a seasoned peace negotiator, Speaker Bagbin will take part in hearings, discussions with Ukrainian and Russian delegations, and high-level engagements with government officials from both nations. His involvement is expected to strengthen the Task Force’s ongoing efforts to promote dialogue and achieve a peaceful resolution to the conflict.
The appointment highlights Ghana’s growing contribution to global peacebuilding and its commitment to supporting international diplomatic initiatives.
