A Filipino ‘Snake Man’ who claimed to be immune to venom died after a cobra bit him on the tongue as he tried to kiss it.

The ‘Snake Man’ Bernardo Alvarez, 62, died after being bitten by cobra while appearing to try and kiss its lips after it slithered into his neighbourhood and he ‘tamed’ it.

Neighbour’s cheered for Bernardo for managing to ‘tame’ another deadly creature.

However, while he showed off the snake to onlookers, Bernardo cheekily held the cobra close to his lips like he was trying to kiss it before the cobra lunged at his mouth and bit his tongue.

He screamed in pain before dropping the cobra then collapsed and died shortly after while waiting for medics to arrive.

Angry locals also killed the snake.

Provincial Health Officer Dr Anna de Guzman said: “The snake’s venom can cause paralysis which is what happened to the snake Man” .

“This paralysis could stop the breathing of the victim, affect the flow of oxygen in the body, and eventually stop the beating of the heart.”

Medics rushed to revive Bernardo but he was no longer responsive and his body was already stiff from the effect of the venom.

Bernardo’s sister Teresa Oca said: “A policeman and a doctor arrived to check on him and told us he had no pulse so they tried to revive him” .

“They were not successful since the cobra’s venom was too strong. We don’t know how we could accept what happened to him.”

Funeral arrangements were done by Bernardo’s family at their home. He was set to be buried this week.

The Northern Philippine Cobra is widely recognised as one of the most venomous snakes in the world. Its toxins directly attack the respiratory system of its victims so a single bite could be extremely deadly.

Doctors Successfully Transplant Pig Kidney To Human Patient

Doctors Successfully Transplant Pig Kidney To Human Patient

From people in comas waking up to diseases vanishing, medical miracles happen every day. But some doctors are advancing the methods we use to get needed organs. According to the New York Times, surgeons in New York City successfully attached a kidney grown inside a pig to a patient.

The unidentified patient apparently suffered from brain death. They were a registered organ donor. However, none of their organs were “suitable” for transplant. This patient’s body was used for research after the family gave their permission.

The Surgery

While on a ventilator, the pig kidney was attached to blood vessels in the upper leg of the patient and covered with a shield. It functioned as it should. The kidney received the blood and processed urine and waste product creatinine  “almost immediately.” The surgery took place in September and the organ was studied for 54 hours.

The kidney was sourced from a pig genetically engineered to grow human organs that won’t be rejected by the human body. Xenotransplantation is the word for the medical procedure that took place. Per the Food & Drug Administration, this procedure “involves the transplantation, implantation or infusion”  of “live cells, tissues or organs from a nonhuman animal source.”

Transplants Needed

Scientists have been working overtime to find new ways to tackle the large demand for organ transplants. Estimates show that more than 100,000 Americans are waiting to receive organs from transplant lists. About 90,240 people on the list need kidneys.

Robert Montgomery, who is the head of the Langone Health’s Transplant Institute at New York University, performed the recent kidney surgery.

“The field up to now has been stuck in the preclinical primate stage, because going from primate to living human is perceived as a big jump,” Dr. Montgomery said.

Why Pigs?

According to Vice, he received a $3.2 million grant from United Therapeutics to fund the medical project. The Maryland-based pharmaceutical company focuses on developing “novel pharmaceutical therapies” and “technologies that expand the availability of transplantable organs.”

Pigs are apparently a great match for organ procurement. NY Times reports that they’re “easier to raise, reach maturation faster, and achieve adult human size in six months.” Moreover, humans are not unfamiliar to using pig body parts. Medical procedures have previously used pig heart values, pig pancreas cells and pig skin.

Although the idea might be off-putting to some, United Therapeutics’ CEO  Martine Rothblatt doesn’t think so.

“Weird does not mean unethical. There’s a 45-degree line on a graph—as long as the utility exceeds the yuckiness, social acceptance wins,” Martine said. “Taking organs from dead people and putting them in living people once seemed weird, it’s not weird anymore. It would be stupid to abjure nature’s greatest invention since chemistry.”

Former US Secretary of State Colin Powell Dies From Covid

Tributes are being paid to former US Secretary of State Colin Powell, who has died of Covid-19 complications aged 84.

The former top military officer died on Monday morning, his family said. He was fully vaccinated.

Powell became the first African-American secretary of state in 2001 under Republican President George W Bush.

He also sparked controversy for helping garner support for the Iraq War.

“We have lost a remarkable and loving husband, father, grandfather and a great American,” the family said in a statement, thanking the staff at the Walter Reed Medical Center “for their caring treatment”.

Powell had previously been diagnosed with multiple myeloma, a type of blood cancer which may have made him more susceptible to Covid symptoms, according to US media, as well as Parkinson’s disease.

President Joe Biden, calling Powell a “dear friend”, said he had embodied the “highest ideals of both warrior and diplomat”.

Former President Bush was among the first to pay tribute to “a great public servant” as well as “a family man and a friend” who “was such a favourite of presidents that he earned the Presidential Medal of Freedom – twice”.

Mr Bush’s vice-president Dick Cheney saluted Powell as “a man who loved his country and served her long and well” while also being “a trailblazer and role model for so many”.

Former President Barack Obama, a Democrat, tweeted that Powell “understood what was best in this country, and tried to bring his own life, career, and public statements in line with that ideal”.

Condoleezza Rice, Powell’s successor as secretary of state and the first black woman in the role, called him “a truly great man” whose “devotion to our nation was not limited to the many great things he did while in uniform or during his time spent in Washington”.

“Much of his legacy will live on in the countless number of young lives he touched.”

Current secretary of state Antony Blinken called Powell’s life “a victory of the American Dream”.

Powell gave the Department of State “the very best of his leadership,” Mr Blinken said. “He never stopped believing in America, and we believe in America in no small part because it helped produce someone like Colin Powell.”

Former UK Prime Minister Tony Blair – who worked closely with Powell during the early years of the Iraq War – said he was someone of “immense capability and integrity” who was “a great companion, with a lovely and self-deprecating sense of humour”.

UK Eases Coronavirus Travel Advice For Ghana And 31 Other Countries

BREAKING NEWS : Bad News For Ghana As UK Confirms That It won't Recognize Vaccinated People From Africa

Britons will no longer be advised to avoid holidays to Ghana and 31 destinations, including Bangladesh, Fiji, Gambia and Malaysia, the Foreign Office has said.

The change should make it easier for people visiting these locations to obtain travel insurance.

These destinations were not on the government’s red list, but the Foreign Office had still warned against non-essential travel to them due to Covid.

Earlier this week, travel rules in the UK were simplified.

The Foreign Office said this latest change in policy followed the “improved public health in many countries” and the “decreased risk to British nationals” as a result of the vaccine rollout.

The advice would apply except in “exceptional circumstances”, such as if the local healthcare system was overwhelmed, it added.

When the Foreign Office advises against travel to a country, all but a handful of travel insurance policies are invalid.

It will continue to advise against all but essential travel for all red list countries where the risk to British nationals is deemed to be “unacceptably high”.

The government is also expected to announce on Thursday changes to the red list. There are currently 54 destinations on the list, including Mexico, Cuba, all of mainland South America, and southern and eastern Africa.
