At least six people have died in a tragic stampede at the El-Wak Sports Stadium in Accra on Wednesday, November 12, 2025, during a Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) recruitment exercise.
Eyewitnesses reported that thousands of hopeful applicants gathered at the venue in an attempt to secure spots in the military, leading to severe overcrowding and chaos at the stadium’s entry points. The intense pushing and shoving resulted in multiple injuries and fatalities.
According to Citi News sources, the bodies of the deceased have been sent to the 37 Military Hospital morgue, while several others are undergoing emergency treatment at the hospital’s casualty ward.
Security personnel have since cordoned off the area, blocking major roads leading to the stadium to control the situation and facilitate rescue operations.
The unfortunate incident occurred after the Ghana Armed Forces extended the recruitment deadline by one week due to technical issues on the application portal. The extension, announced by Colonel Evelyn Ntiamoah Asamoah, Acting Director General of Public Relations, aimed to allow applicants who faced difficulties earlier to complete their registration.
Authorities have yet to issue an official statement on the stampede, but preliminary investigations point to poor crowd control and an overwhelming turnout as the main causes of the disaster. A full inquiry is expected to be launched to prevent similar incidents in future recruitment drives.
