Eleven illegal miners are feared dead after being trapped in an abandoned underground mine in the Bogoso-Prestea area of the Western Region.
Details surrounding the incident remain uncertain. Some residents report that part of the tunnel collapsed and buried the miners, while others suspect the group suffocated after thick smoke believed to be from a blast filled the underground shaft.
The abandoned mine is linked to Heath Goldfields, which has yet to comment on the situation.
Sources confirmed that four bodies have been retrieved and taken to the Prestea Government Hospital. He explained that the affected concession is currently not operational. It was previously run by FGR until the company’s licence was revoked in February 2024, after which a new operator took over later that year.
Sources close to the new operator say illegal miners had been accessing the abandoned tunnels and were underground when the suspected blast occurred.
Although initial reports suggested 11 possible deaths, only four bodies have been recovered so far, and the exact number of casualties remains unknown.
The incident is believed to have occurred over the weekend.
