Security personnel were forced to intervene on Monday, December 1, 2025, after tensions flared outside the Manhyia Palace in Kumasi during the ongoing Bawku chieftaincy mediation process.
Police and military officers mounted heavy security at all major entry points to the palace after a brief clash erupted when one faction reportedly began celebrating during the proceedings. The cause of the disturbance remains unclear.
The heightened security comes ahead of the anticipated final ruling by Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, who is expected to deliver his decision on the decades-old Bawku conflict later today. The Asantehene was appointed by President John Dramani Mahama to lead the mediation effort.
Otumfuo’s involvement dates back to April 2025, when he met representatives of the opposing factions between April 28 and 30, reopening dialogue and renewing hopes for peace.
Among those accompanying the Kusaasi delegation were several dignitaries, including Garu MP Thomas Winsum Anabah, Binduri MP, Zebilla MP Ebenezer Alumire Ndebilla, former Binduri MP Issifu Mahamoud, former parliamentary candidates for Zebilla, and local government officials such as the DCEs for Zebilla and Garu and the MCE for Bawku Central.
Security agencies remain on high alert to prevent further escalation as the palace prepares for the final ruling.
