Police have arrested a 42-year-old commercial bus driver, Mohammed Gzali, and his mate, Mohammed Jabir, for allegedly transporting a large quantity of ammunition on a passenger bus heading to Savelugu.
The arrest was made on Tuesday, January 6, 2026, around 7:00 p.m., when officers stationed at the Kantanso–Asankare Police Barrier intercepted a Kia Grand Bird bus with registration number AK 1309–21.

The bus was travelling from Accra to Tamale and onward to Savelugu when it was stopped for a routine inspection. During the check, police officers became suspicious that the vehicle might be conveying prohibited items.
Following instructions from the Divisional Commander, a thorough search was conducted on the bus. The search led to the discovery of a fertiliser sack concealed among passengers’ luggage, containing 1,050 rounds of AAA and BB cartridge ammunition.
During interrogation, the driver reportedly informed the police that the sack had been handed to him by an unidentified individual at the bus terminal as a parcel. He claimed the consignment was to be delivered to a person known to him only as “Oboye” in Tamale.
The bus was immediately impounded, while the ammunition was seized and retained as exhibits. The driver and his mate are currently in police custody, assisting with ongoing investigations as police work to trace the source and intended recipient of the ammunition.
Police have assured the public that further updates will be communicated as investigations continue.
