Sammi Awuku, who serves as the campaign manager for Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has expressed his confidence in Bawumia’s potential to lead the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to victory in the 2024 presidential election. Awuku discussed this on Citi FM’s “Eyewitness News,” emphasizing Bawumia’s unifying qualities and strong leadership capabilities. He also asserted that Bawumia could effectively challenge the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) in their strongholds.
Awuku pointed out the NDC’s inroads into NPP territory, particularly in the Ashanti region, and mentioned Bawumia’s ability to secure more votes in that area. He further noted that Bawumia could compete in the NDC’s traditional strongholds, such as the Zongos, the North, and the Volta region.
While acknowledging the difficulty of winning the Volta region in 2024, Awuku expressed confidence in Bawumia’s capacity to turn the NDC’s strongholds into battlegrounds.
Awuku’s statements come as the NPP prepares for its presidential primaries on November 4, where Bawumia is a frontrunner facing stiff competition from Assin Central MP Kennedy Agyapong.
A recent poll conducted by the Institute of Research Innovation & Development at Kumasi Technical University indicated that Bawumia has a significant advantage in the NPP flagbearer race. The poll found that 71.1% of NPP delegates believe Bawumia has a better chance of securing the party’s nomination, compared to 26.8% for Kennedy Agyapong.
Furthermore, the poll revealed that 69.9% of delegates view Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia as the most unifying candidate, with 19.4% supporting Kennedy Agyapong. In terms of visible leadership qualities, 70.5% of delegates favored Bawumia, while 19.4% mentioned Kennedy Agyapong.
The poll results suggest that Bawumia enjoys widespread popularity among NPP delegates, positioning him favorably to win the party’s presidential nomination in the upcoming primaries.
