Retired Supreme Court Justice Julius Ansah has passed away at the age of 74, four years after retiring from the bench following 41 years of distinguished public service.
Justice Ansah’s legal career began at the Attorney-General’s Department in Koforidua, where he served as a National Service Person after being called to the Bar. His judicial journey officially started in 1979 when he was appointed District Magistrate Grade II. He served in Assin Fosu in the Central Region, before being promoted to District Magistrate Grade I in 1981.
He ascended through the ranks, becoming a Circuit Court judge in 1986 and later a High Court judge in 1989. His first posting as a High Court Justice was in Tamale, Northern Region, where he also served as the Supervising High Court Judge.
Justice Ansah was appointed to the Court of Appeal in 1999, and five years later, he reached the pinnacle of his career when he was elevated to the Supreme Court in 2004. Throughout his career, he made significant contributions to Ghana’s judicial system, including serving on the General Legal Council and the Judicial Council. He also held the role of Acting Chief Justice during his tenure.
Upon his retirement, the Judicial Service honored Justice Ansah with a brief but heartfelt ceremony, where he was lauded for his selfless service and invaluable contribution to justice delivery in Ghana. A citation, long service award, and retirement package were presented to him in recognition of his dedication.
During his retirement ceremony, then-Chief Justice Anin Yeboah expressed both joy and sadness, stating that while it was a privilege to celebrate Justice Ansah’s career, his absence would be felt on the Bench. Chief Justice Yeboah commended Justice Ansah’s modesty, honesty, and professionalism, which had been evident throughout his 41 years of service, from his early days as a magistrate to his role as a Supreme Court Justice.
