The Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Cocoa Board (COCOBOD), Dr Ransford Anertey Abbey, has refiled a GH¢20 million defamation suit against the Bono Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Kwame Baffoe, popularly known as Abronye DC.
The fresh suit follows the dismissal of the initial case by the Accra High Court on Thursday, January 22, 2026. The court ruled that the earlier action was procedurally defective because it was filed through COCOBOD’s Legal Department instead of a private legal practitioner, despite being a personal suit.
According to the newly filed writ published by Graphic.com.gh, Dr Abbey accused Abronye of making defamatory statements about him during a radio broadcast.
He alleged that Abronye falsely claimed he visits cocoa farms and engages cocoa farmers using a personal chair driven from Accra. The suit further states that Abronye accused him of replacing COCOBOD’s Director of Finance in order to steal funds meant for cocoa farmers.
Dr Abbey described the statements as false, malicious, and a calculated attempt to damage his personal and professional reputation, particularly in his role as acting CEO of COCOBOD.
“The Defendant made the defamatory statements with a clear and deliberate intent to harm the Plaintiff’s personal and professional reputation, knowing that such statements would cause substantial damage to the Plaintiff’s standing in society,” the writ stated.
In addition to the GH¢20 million damages, Dr Abbey is seeking a court order compelling Abronye to issue an unconditional retraction and apology, and to remove the alleged defamatory statements within 14 days of judgment.
The suit also requests a perpetual injunction restraining Abronye, or anyone acting on his behalf, from making further defamatory remarks against the COCOBOD CEO.
