Prof. Boampong’s Appointment as UCC Vice-Chancellor Terminated

The governing council of the University of Cape Coast (UCC) has officially terminated the appointment of Professor Johnson Nyarko Boampong as the Vice-Chancellor, effective July 31, 2024.

Prof. Boampong, who began his four-year tenure in August 2020, saw his term come to an abrupt end following a recent decision by the university’s governing body. A notice signed by the council chairman, Professor Harold S. Amonoo-Kuofi, declared the previously proposed two-year extension null and void.

“Please note that the purported renewal/extension of your appointment as Vice-Chancellor at the Council’s meeting on the 28th of July 2023, for a term of two (2) years effective 1st August 2024, is void and consequently same is revoked as it breaches the University’s Statutes on renewal of appointment of the Vice-Chancellor,” the notice stated.

While the governing council acknowledged that Prof. Boampong’s appointment could be extended by two years at a time, up to a maximum of five years beyond his retirement age, it clarified that no such contractual extension had been agreed upon. The council highlighted that such extensions apply only to his general university membership and not his role as Vice-Chancellor due to statutory limitations.

Prof. Boampong has been encouraged to apply for an extension if he wishes to continue in his role. “You may, however, apply to Council for its consideration in line with laid down procedure for the purpose of renewing your term as Vice-Chancellor for a period not exceeding your retirement age and which does not breach the Constitution and the University’s Statutes,” the council advised.

This decision underscores the university’s commitment to adhering to its statutes and regulatory frameworks in the governance of its leadership roles.
