Police in the Northern Region have rescued a kidnapping victim and arrested three suspects after a swift, intelligence-driven operation in Wapuli, in the Yendi District.
The Northern Regional Police Commander, DCOP Wisdom Lavoe, confirmed the incident in an internal situation report, noting that officers moved quickly after the case was reported to the Tamale Regional Police Intelligence Directorate on 2 December 2025. The kidnappers had demanded GH¢100,000 from the victim’s family.
Following the report, DCOP Lavoe dispatched a five-member intelligence team to Wapuli with a clear mission: rescue the victim, track the gang, and effect their arrest. The team successfully freed the victim on 5 December.
In the early hours of 6 December, police engaged the suspects in a shootout after tracing them to a hideout. The armed group, believed to number four, escaped under the cover of darkness, abandoning a motorbike with registration number M-25-NR and a Samsung phone at the scene.
Later that morning, the intelligence team tracked the fugitives to Bokpaba, along the Bimbilla–Yendi stretch. Three suspects — Haruna Seidu, 31; Amidu Bande, 30; and Osman Bande, 40 — were arrested and detained at the Yendi Police Station. They were scheduled for transfer to the Regional Headquarters in Tamale on 7 December.
Police also retrieved two additional motorbikes — one registered M-25-GB 1026 and another unregistered — along with GH¢70,000 suspected to be part of the ransom paid before the victim’s release.
One suspect remains at large and is believed to have suffered gunshot wounds during the earlier exchange. Police describe him as armed and dangerous and say efforts to locate him have been intensified.
The Northern Regional Police Command has encouraged the public to assist with information that could lead to the arrest of the remaining suspect, adding that further updates will be provided as investigations advance.
