Police officers in the Volta Region have reportedly rejected a GH¢5,000 bribe offered by a taxi driver arrested for transporting suspected narcotic substances.
The suspect, identified as Innocent Kpeglo, a 36-year-old taxi driver, was intercepted following a tip-off while travelling from Dzolokpuita in the Ho West District towards Ho.
According to the police, a search conducted on the Opel taxicab, with registration number CR 675-12, uncovered 37 parcels of dried leaves suspected to be marijuana hidden beneath the back seat of the vehicle.
Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Rockson Gyasi, the Ho West District Police Commander, confirmed the arrest, explaining that a police team was quickly mobilised after receiving intelligence about the vehicle transporting contraband.
He said at about 5:57 a.m., officers spotted the vehicle on the road. Upon seeing the police, the driver pulled over and opened the bonnet, pretending the car had developed a fault.
DSP Gyasi stated that when officers approached the driver, he admitted he was transporting the narcotics to a client in Aflao. He then allegedly offered GH¢5,000 to the officers in an attempt to avoid arrest.
The police rejected the bribe and escorted the suspect to the Anyirawase Police Station, where a detailed search of the vehicle led to the discovery of the suspected narcotics.
The suspect was later transferred to the Volta Regional Police Headquarters in Ho and is currently being processed for court on charges related to possession of narcotic substances.
