The Ghana Police Service has extended an official invitation to Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin to assist in investigations following a viral video purportedly showing him assaulting a police officer during the recent ‘Save the Judiciary’ demonstration.
In a statement, the Police said they had reviewed multiple video clips of the incident, which prompted the decision to involve the Member of Parliament in the ongoing inquiry.
To facilitate the investigation, the Police Service has formally written to the Speaker of Parliament requesting the release of Afenyo-Markin for questioning. The police officer allegedly involved in the confrontation is also expected to assist with the probe.
Meanwhile, Bright Ofori Ampofo, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Chairman for Bortianor Ngleshie Amanfro, has come to Afenyo-Markin’s defense, claiming the MP was provoked and only retaliated after being hit by the officer.
The incident has stirred debate across political and civil society circles, with calls for an impartial investigation to uphold accountability and the rule of law.
