Police arrest driver with 713 slabs of suspected narcotic drugs at Bekwai

The Ashanti South Regional Police Command has arrested a suspect for unlawful possession of large quantities of substances suspected to be narcotic drugs following an operation at Asanso in the Ashanti Region.

The suspect, identified as Atampugri Akanyani, was arrested on January 26, 2026, after a police snap check team intercepted a Mercedes-Benz Sprinter bus with registration number AC 718-25 at the Asanso checkpoint. Akanyani was the driver of the vehicle at the time of the arrest.

A search conducted on the bus uncovered nine nylon sacks concealed inside the vehicle. Upon inspection, the sacks were found to contain a total of 713 compressed slabs of dried leaves suspected to be narcotic drugs.

Police further revealed that during the arrest, the suspect allegedly attempted to bribe officers with GH¢150,000.00, an offer which was firmly declined by the personnel on duty.

The suspect is currently in police custody assisting with investigations, as police intensify efforts to trace the source of the suspected narcotic drugs and identify other individuals linked to the operation.
