In the Eastern Region of Ghana, the Ghana Police Service has apprehended forty-six individuals linked to the recent assaults on the Bepong Chiefs palace and police officers in Kwahu Bepong. These arrests follow an initial capture of 25 individuals associated with the violent incident, bringing the total number of suspects in custody to seventy-one.
The violent altercation occurred on February 4, 2024, during an attempt by the police to apprehend a suspect, Kwasi Tenkorang, accused of the murder of two individuals in the neighboring Adwumasu farming community. The suspect, a 23-year-old ex-convict, allegedly committed the heinous acts of rape and murder against a 45-year-old woman named Akua Kyerewaa.
Tragically, during the confrontation at the chief’s palace, stray bullets fired by the police led to the deaths of two individuals. Among the deceased was Kwasi Antwi, a 65-year-old brother of the victim who heroically attempted to rescue his sister during the alleged crime, but was fatally struck on the head with a metal bar.
Eyewitnesses recounted how a bystander named Frederick narrowly escaped harm while witnessing the incident and being pursued by the suspect. Upon learning of the suspect’s arrest, members of the community stormed the chief’s palace, demanding immediate justice and the release of the suspect. However, timely police intervention prevented a lynching, though the enraged crowd turned their aggression towards the police, pelting them with stones and objects.
In an official statement, the police assured that security, law, and order have been restored in the Bepong township. The arrested suspects will face legal proceedings to ensure accountability for their actions. Forty of the apprehended individuals have been identified as having played various roles in the attacks and are being detained to aid ongoing investigations.
