Police arrest 22 foreign nationals over suspected illegal mining in Savannah Region

The Savannah Regional Police Intelligence Department has arrested 22 Togolese nationals over suspected involvement in illegal mining activities in the West Gonja Municipality.

The arrests were confirmed by the Ghana Police Service in a statement shared on its official Facebook page.

According to the police, the suspects were arrested on Friday, January 23, 2026, after officers intercepted a Kia truck with registration number BA 223-12, driven by Abdul Majeed Yakubu.

Preliminary investigations revealed that the occupants of the vehicle were travelling to Tuntumba, a community known for illegal mining activities, with the intention of engaging in galamsey.

The suspects are currently in police custody and are expected to be handed over to the Ghana Immigration Service for further legal and immigration processes.

Police say investigations are ongoing and have assured the public that further updates will be provided as the case develops.
