President John Dramani Mahama arrived in Burkina Faso today as part of his ‘Good Neighbourliness’ tour, aimed at strengthening diplomatic ties with neighboring countries.

Upon arrival, Mahama was warmly welcomed at the airport by Burkina Faso’s military leader, Captain Ibrahim Traoré. The two leaders later engaged in a closed-door meeting, discussing key issues such as regional security, economic cooperation, and diplomatic relations.

This visit is part of Mahama’s broader tour, which includes stops in Niger and Mali—three nations that have recently exited the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) to form the Alliance of Sahel States (AES).

Speaking on the matter, Mahama emphasized that the primary reason for the withdrawal of Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger from ECOWAS is a breakdown in trust. He highlighted the importance of rebuilding confidence among the nations, noting that while the process may take time, efforts must be made to restore strong regional cooperation.
