Parliament has approved the Simon Diedong Dombo University of Business and Integrated Development Studies (Amendment) Bill, 2025, clearing the way for the institution to be renamed the University of Business and Integrated Development Studies (UBIDS), Wa.

The Bill, passed on Friday, December 19, 2025, formally removes the name of Ghana’s late Prime Minister, Simon Diedong Dombo, from the university’s title while maintaining its mandate in business and integrated development studies.

According to the government, the decision is aimed at strengthening the university’s relationship with stakeholders by improving public perception and increasing interest in the institution. Authorities believe the new name will help boost student enrolment, attract enhanced funding opportunities, and deepen support from alumni and development partners.

Government officials also indicated that the amendment is part of efforts to position the university more competitively on the global stage. They argued that the revised name would make the institution more appealing to international students, researchers, and academic collaborators, thereby enhancing its global visibility.

Following parliamentary approval, the name change will take effect after presidential assent. All official documentation, signage, and branding of the university will subsequently be updated to reflect the new name.
