Parliament has officially approved Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonnie as Ghana’s new Chief Justice, following an intense vetting session and debate over the Appointments Committee’s report on Thursday, November 13, 2025.
Justice Baffoe-Bonnie’s nomination was initially met with controversy during his vetting on Monday, November 10, when Minority Members of Parliament walked out in protest, describing the process as unconstitutional. They argued that court cases challenging the removal of former Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo were still pending, making the nomination premature and politically motivated.
Despite the Minority’s objections, the Majority pushed forward with the approval process. The Appointments Committee’s report, presented by First Deputy Speaker Bernard Ahiafor, praised Justice Baffoe-Bonnie for his integrity, extensive experience, and commitment to justice, noting that he was fully qualified to lead the judiciary.
A head count conducted after the Minority rejected a voice vote showed 169 votes in favor and 63 against, sealing Justice Baffoe-Bonnie’s confirmation.
Justice Baffoe-Bonnie, who has served on the Supreme Court since 2008, is regarded as one of Ghana’s most experienced justices, having contributed to numerous landmark legal decisions. His appointment is expected to bring continuity and stability to the judiciary as the nation addresses major constitutional and legal reforms.
He will be sworn in by President John Dramani Mahama at the Jubilee House in the coming days.
