The Overlord of Dagbon, Yaa Naa Mahama Abukari, has mandated the closure of the St. Vincent College of Education offices following a dispute over the appointment of a new principal.
The college recently faced a vacancy for the principal position after the retirement of its previous head. Yaa Naa Abukari recommended a candidate from the Dagbon kingdom for the role. However, the college’s board opted for a different individual, sparking controversy.
In response, the Registrar of the Dagbon Traditional Council, Alhassan Abdul Fataw, instructed staff and management to vacate the premises and lock the offices until the issue is resolved.
Fataw expressed the Overlord’s displeasure, stating that the board’s decision to bypass his recommendation demonstrated disrespect. He emphasized the historical lack of representation of Dagombas in leadership roles at the college.
“The board failed to inform the King of the vacancy. It was only after hearing about ongoing interviews that the King intervened and urged the board to consider an indigenous candidate. Despite this, the new principal chosen is not from the Dagbon kingdom,” Fataw said.
The decision to close the offices was also influenced by the youth of Yendi, who demanded adherence to the Overlord’s directive as a step toward addressing the perceived marginalization of Dagombas within the institution.
