The ongoing drought in northern Ghana has significantly impacted 435,872 farmers, who cultivate approximately 871,745 hectares of land, according to the Minister of Food and Agriculture, Bryan Acheampong. The affected crops include maize, rice, groundnut, soybean, sorghum, millet, and yam.
During a press briefing in Accra on August 26, 2024, Minister Acheampong revealed that the dry spell has resulted in an estimated loss of GH₵3.5 billion in investments for these farmers. The potential revenue loss due to the drought is projected to reach GH₵10.4 billion.
The Minister highlighted the severity of the situation, stressing the urgent need for measures to support the affected farmers and prevent further losses. This drought has exacerbated concerns over food security in the region, with the government taking steps such as banning grain exports and deploying security forces to prevent smuggling.
