A final-year student at O’Reilly Senior High School has been remanded for two weeks by the La District Court for allegedly fatally stabbing a classmate. The student, whose name has been withheld, has been provisionally charged with murder. His plea was not accepted, and he is scheduled to return to court on September 19, 2024, allowing the police more time to investigate.
The incident occurred after a disagreement between the accused and Edward Borketey Sackey, the deceased, reportedly over whose parents were wealthier.
The Ghana Education Service (GES) has issued a statement urging the public to avoid speculation and allow the investigative process to unfold. The GES expressed regret over the tragic event, offering condolences to the bereaved family, friends, and the school community. A GES delegation, led by the Director General, visited the school and the deceased’s family to offer support.
The GES also assured the public that they are working closely with authorities to ensure a thorough investigation and aim to conclude their administrative inquiries within two weeks while the police continue with the criminal investigation.
The statement added that calm had been restored at the school, and efforts were being made to ensure the safety and well-being of students and staff. The GES remains committed to providing a secure learning environment and preventing such incidents in the future.
