More than 211,000 delegates of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) are voting today, Saturday, January 31, 2026, to elect the party’s flagbearer ahead of the next presidential election.
A total of 211,849 delegates are expected to cast their ballots at 333 polling centres across the country in what party officials describe as a crucial internal exercise.
Five aspirants are contesting the position: former Vice President and 2024 presidential candidate, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia; former Assin Central MP, Kennedy Agyapong; former Minister of Education, Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum; former Minister for Food and Agriculture, Dr Bryan Acheampong; and former NPP General Secretary, Kwabena Agyei Agyepong.
The exercise is being supervised by the Electoral Commission, with party-appointed officials and security personnel deployed nationwide to ensure a peaceful, transparent, and credible process.
Delegates participating in the primaries include national, regional, constituency, and polling station executives, as well as other accredited party representatives.
Party leadership has urged delegates to maintain discipline and respect the outcome of the polls, stressing that unity after the elections will be critical as the NPP prepares for the national contest.
Voting began at 7:00 a.m. and is expected to close at 2:00 p.m., after which counting and collation will take place. Results are expected to be announced later today.
