NPP and NDC Supporters Clash Over Bridge Construction in Awutu Akomatom

Tension erupted between supporters of Ghana’s New Patriotic Party (NPP) and National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the Awutu Senya West constituency, Central region, over the construction of a bridge in the Awutu Akomatom community.

The clash arose from conflicting claims regarding which party was responsible for the bridge’s construction. Police intervention prevented the situation from escalating further.

The NPP’s Awutu Senya West constituency chairman, Mr. Paul Aidoo, stated that residents of Akomatom had appealed to their party’s 2024 parliamentary candidate, Mr. Eugene Arhin, who is also the Director of Communications at the Presidency. During a visit to the area, residents reportedly expressed the need for a bridge, prompting the NPP to initiate the construction process. However, NDC supporters contested this, asserting that their MP, Madam Gizella Tetteh Agbotui, had already engaged with the community and provided 20 bags of cement to commence construction.

The NDC supporters criticized Mr. Arhin’s involvement, questioning why he was initiating construction when the MP had already committed to the project. They accused the NPP of opportunism, suggesting that the MP’s efforts were being undermined for political gain.

The conflicting narratives highlight the intense competition and rivalry between the NPP and NDC, especially in the lead-up to the 2024 elections. The incident underscores the importance of effective communication and coordination in community development projects to avoid such clashes in the future.
