No Chaos Expected in Parliament on December 16 – Afenyo-Markin

Alexander Afenyo-Markin, the Majority Leader in Ghana’s Parliament, has assured the public of a peaceful and orderly parliamentary session when the House reconvenes on Monday, December 16, 2024.

Afenyo-Markin emphasized that the recent court ruling affirming the New Patriotic Party (NPP) as the Majority caucus has resolved any disputes regarding parliamentary composition. The Effutu MP stated that the decision eliminates any lingering uncertainties, paving the way for a productive session.

The Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, has directed that the session be held at the Grand Arena of the Accra International Conference Centre (AICC).

Addressing Citi News, Afenyo-Markin reiterated that the court ruling clarified the constitutional interpretation of MPs who filed as independent candidates for the 2024 elections. He explained that their tenure and caucus affiliations remain unaffected, solidifying the NPP’s Majority status.

“This Parliament would expire on January 6, 2025. The NPP is the Majority in Parliament, and there is no doubt about it,” he stated.

Afenyo-Markin expressed confidence in a controversy-free session, underscoring the finality of the court’s decision and the focus on parliamentary duties moving forward.
