Nigerian Traditional Monarch Assassinated, Wife Abducted by Unknown Gunmen

In a tragic incident that unfolded on Thursday night, armed assailants launched a deadly assault on the palace of retired army general Segun Aremu, who held the esteemed title of Olukoro of Koro, a traditional ruler in south-western Nigeria. The assailants, yet to be identified, not only fatally shot Segun Aremu but also abducted his wife and another individual.

The motive behind the attack remains unclear, and it is uncertain whether the perpetrators have made any ransom demands. This grim event adds to the escalating concerns over security in the region, with recent calls from 50 civil society groups urging President Bola Tinubu to declare a state of emergency. The groups assert that over 1,800 individuals have fallen victim to abductions since the president assumed office last May.
