Six officials of the Scholarship Secretariat have been arrested by the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB) in connection with an ongoing audit into the institution’s financial and administrative operations.
According to the Secretariat, the arrests occurred a few weeks ago, and the individuals were subsequently granted bail. However, they remain under active investigation as the audit progresses.
Details surrounding the alleged offences and findings of the audit have not yet been disclosed, but the development has heightened public scrutiny of the Secretariat’s management and accountability systems.
The arrests come in the wake of mounting concerns over alleged irregularities said to have taken place under the institution’s previous leadership.
Current Registrar, Alexander Asafo-Agyei, had earlier voiced these concerns soon after assuming office in February 2025.
In a June 10, 2025, interview on Adom TV, Mr. Asafo-Agyei criticised what he described as a lack of transparency and accountability in the Secretariat’s prior operations. He reiterated his determination to restore integrity, ensure proper oversight, and rebuild public trust in the institution’s work.
