Shalimar Abbiusi, a 30-year-old Belgian national and spokesperson for the emerging political group ‘The New Force,’ has refuted accusations of fabricating documents to secure a residency permit in Ghana. The charges against her stem from allegedly violating Section 52(1) of Ghana’s Immigration Act by falsely declaring herself as a student to obtain a permit.
Despite her denial, Shalimar was granted bail by the Kaneshie District Court, with a requirement to provide ¢20,000 and two sureties. Additionally, she must report to the Ghana Immigration Service thrice weekly until the case’s conclusion.
Before her arrest, Shalimar was seen in a circulating social media video discussing matters related to The New Force, an entity yet to be officially recognized as a political group in Ghana.
Court documents reveal that she purportedly misrepresented herself as a student of Ghana Christian University College in September 2023 to bypass legal prerequisites for a student permit. Investigations indicate that her false declaration led to the acquisition of the said permit.
The Ghana Immigration Service apprehended Shalimar on December 6, 2022, after summoning her for questioning regarding her immigration status. It’s reported that she initially arrived in Ghana on September 4, 2017, making regular visits, but allegedly claimed residency in 2018 upon her supposed admission to Ghana Christian University College—information disputed upon verification with the institution.
Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding The New Force’s emergence and the issues linked to Shalimar Abbiusi’s residency permit acquisition.
