Netizens React Following News that KNUST SRC Purchased GH¢ 850,000 Pickup to Beef Up Security on Campus

The Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) has been engulfed in controversy following the revelation that the Students’ Representative Council (SRC) recently acquired a Toyota Hardbody LX Pickup for GH¢ 850,000.00. The move, intended to bolster campus security, has stirred up skepticism among netizens regarding the cost and decision-making process.

The purchase, facilitated by contributions from previous SRC administrations, namely the Abuah-Reginald-led administration of 2021 and the Frank-Deborah Administration of 2022, amounted to GH¢ 350,000.00 and GH¢ 500,000.00 respectively. The vehicle was officially commissioned by the Yvonne-Nkay-Led Administration, with representatives from KNUST Management and previous SRC administrations in attendance.

However, reactions on social media have been overwhelmingly critical, with many expressing doubt about the exorbitant price tag attached to the pickup truck. Netizens have voiced concerns about the perceived lack of transparency and accountability surrounding the procurement process, questioning the necessity and value of the vehicle in relation to pressing campus issues such as power outages and water shortages.

Critics have also directed their ire towards the current SRC leadership, particularly President Yvonne Nkay, accusing them of incompetence and mismanagement of resources. Some have lamented the missed opportunity for positive change under the first female president, highlighting the disappointment in her alleged involvement in dishonest practices.

Moreover, comparisons have been drawn to previous administrations, with inquiries into the effectiveness and utilization of previously purchased vehicles, such as the Nissan pickup acquired during the Micheal Abuah-led administration.
