The Chief Accountant and Director of the National Sports Authority (NSA) were left speechless as they struggled to justify why a portion of funds received for events in Accra was deposited into their Kumasi account, raising serious concerns about financial mismanagement within the organization.
During a sitting of Parliament’s Public Accounts Committee on Monday, February 5, revelations emerged regarding irregularities in the handling of finances by the NSA. The Chairperson of the Committee, James Klutse Avedzi, called for an urgent special audit of the NSA by the Auditor General in light of these disturbing findings.
“We will recommend in our report, but I think you should recommend this to the Auditor General himself immediately. There is a need for a special audit of the National Sports Authority,” stated Dr. Avedzi, expressing deep concern over the apparent chaos within the organization.
The call for a special audit comes amid alarming revelations made during the Committee’s session. It was disclosed that a portion of the funds intended for events in Accra was mysteriously lodged into a Kumasi account, leaving the Chief Accountant and Director of the NSA struggling to provide adequate explanations for this irregularity.
Echoing Dr. Avedzi’s sentiments, Sam George, a member of the Public Accounts Committee and MP for Ningo Prampram constituency, emphasized the urgent need for intervention in the NSA’s financial affairs. George highlighted pervasive issues of “looting” within the organization, alleging that revenues generated from event rentals were not being deposited into the agency’s designated account.
According to George, this revelation is just the tip of the iceberg, with a litany of other problems plaguing the NSA, including misuse of funds, lack of transparency, and questionable accounting practices.
I made a promise on the 27th of December 2023, as quoted in the tweet below. The pledge was to deal decisively with the rot at the National Sports Authority under the leadership of Prof. Peter Twumasi.

It is not possible to have watched the trending videos of Peter Twumasi (National Sports Authority boss) and Mustapha Ussif (Sports Minister) and then conclude that Ghana sports is going anywhere.
