Albert Kan-Dapaah, Ghana’s National Security Minister, has issued a stern warning, highlighting the significant threat that disinformation and fake news pose to Ghana’s security, peace, and democratic stability.
The rise of false information circulated through various means has become an increasingly worrisome issue, particularly in the realm of national security.
According to the country’s Minister of National Security, the dissemination of untrue narratives via social media platforms presents a substantial risk to Ghana’s security.
Addressing a conference focused on the Impact of Disinformation on Electoral Integrity, Peace, and Security in Africa, Mr. Kan-Dapaah shed light on the challenges related to disinformation, particularly in the context of recent events, such as the coup in Niger.
“Following the coup in Niger, certain individuals within academia, civil society, and the media, as you may have observed, have been promoting false narratives in support of a coup or military rule,” indicated the national security leader.
He emphasized the seriousness of the issue, stating, “And let me reiterate that today, from my vantage point, I can confidently assert that this misinformation constitutes one of the major security challenges I have to confront on a daily basis.”
