The National Anti-Illegal Mining Operations Secretariat (NAIMOS) has apprehended ten armed men at the Nyankamam-Armori Forest in the Aowin Municipality of the Western North Region for allegedly impersonating members of the government’s anti-galamsey taskforce.
The suspects, reportedly linked to the Aowin Traditional Authority, were accused of extorting money from illegal miners and facilitating galamsey operations in the area.
During a dawn operation, the NAIMOS team intercepted the group and seized weapons and talismans believed to have been used to intimidate miners. The suspects have since been transferred to the Ghana Police Service for further investigations and possible prosecution.
Authorities have reaffirmed their commitment to clamping down on individuals or groups exploiting the government’s anti-illegal mining initiative for personal gain.
