Interior Minister Muntaka Mohammed Mubarak has directed an immediate investigation into a viral video showing Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) officers dragging a sick United States deportee on the floor at a hotel in Ogbojo, Accra. The incident, captured on November 11, 2025, sparked widespread outrage on social media.
The deportee, seen being forcibly dragged by uniformed officers at the VICSEM Hotel, was reportedly unwell and on medication at the time. Human rights lawyer Oliver Barker-Vormawor sharply condemned the act after the video surfaced.
Speaking on Joy FM’s Super Morning Show on Monday, November 17, the minister said he had instructed the Comptroller-General of Immigration to provide a full report within the week. He hinted the deportee may have suffered a medical episode due to missing her medication but cautioned against drawing conclusions before the official report is submitted.
Muntaka stressed that the government does not sanction the mistreatment of deportees, insisting that Ghana remains committed to treating all persons—especially ECOWAS nationals—with dignity and respect.
He outlined the standard protocol for handling deportees, explaining that processes are coordinated with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and relevant embassies to ensure safe relocation or onward travel. Deportees without criminal backgrounds are supported to either remain in Ghana through embassy arrangements or return to their home countries.
The minister assured the public that the Ogbojo incident will be thoroughly investigated, and any misconduct uncovered will be addressed promptly. The GIS report is expected by the end of the week.
