The Ministry of Food and Agriculture (MoFA), under the Feed Ghana Programme, has officially begun the distribution of poultry through the Nkoko Nketenkete initiative in the Ashanti Region.
The initiative, introduced by the National Democratic Congress (NDC) government in 2025, is designed to revive Ghana’s poultry industry, reduce the country’s heavy reliance on imported poultry products, and strengthen national food security.
According to MoFA, Ghana’s annual demand for poultry meat before 2025 exceeded 350,000 metric tonnes, yet local production accounted for only about 15,000 metric tonnes. This shortfall resulted in imports of more than 300,000 metric tonnes each year.
Speaking to Citi News, the National Coordinator of the Feed Ghana Programme, Bright Kwadzo Demordzi, described the rollout in the Ashanti Region as a critical step toward rebuilding the local poultry value chain. He noted that the initiative is expected to create jobs and improve livelihoods, particularly for youth and women involved in agribusiness.
He explained that local poultry production previously met only about five percent of national demand, forcing the country to spend an estimated 300 million US dollars annually on imported frozen poultry products.
As part of the initial phase, selected beneficiaries in the Ejisu and Mampong Municipalities have each received 50 birds, officially marking the start of the Nkoko Nketenkete project under the Feed Ghana Programme.
