The Minority in Parliament has urged the government to immediately suspend the ongoing nationwide military recruitment exercise following the tragic stampede at the El-Wak Sports Stadium on Wednesday, November 12, 2025. The incident claimed six lives and left several others injured when thousands of applicants crowded the venue to participate in the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) recruitment process.

Members of Parliament serving on the Defence and Interior Committee visited the victims receiving treatment at the 37 Military Hospital to assess the situation.

During the visit, the Ranking Member, Reverend John Ntim Fordjour, called for a comprehensive review of the recruitment process to ensure public safety and fairness.

“We are appealing that, in the best interest of safeguarding the lives of potential recruits, all nationwide recruitment exercises should be halted—not just in Accra. A full probe and reform must be conducted to put in place optimal safety measures before resuming the process,” Reverend Fordjour stated.

He further urged the government to provide adequate support and compensation to the families of the deceased and those injured.

“Another appeal we want to make to the government is to ensure that families of the victims are properly compensated. For those who are wounded, if they recover and meet the GAF medical requirements, they should be prioritised. Their relatives should also be considered where necessary,” he added.

The Minority’s call adds to growing public concern over safety protocols during mass recruitment exercises across the country.
