The Minerals Commission has taken a firm stance, ensuring that no mineral rights, whether for prospecting or mining, will be entertained within the bounds of the Kakum National Park. This resolute position comes after concerns were raised by several Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) who vehemently opposed an attempt by the mining firm, High Street Limited, to secure a mining license within the Kakum National Park.
In response to these concerns, the Minerals Commission issued an official statement on Sunday, November 12, 2023, signed and released by its Chief Executive Officer, Martin Kwaku Ayisi. The statement formally notified the CSOs and the general public that High Street Limited’s mining application had been unequivocally rejected and would not be subject to further consideration or processing.
As a result of this decision, the Commission promptly removed the application from the online mining cadastre, reaffirming its commitment to preserving the integrity of the Kakum National Park.
The Minerals Commission, through this announcement, seeks to assure the public that it will uphold the prohibition on granting any mineral rights for either prospecting or mining activities within the Kakum National Park. This resounding declaration reaffirms the commitment to protect the ecological and environmental significance of this cherished national treasure.
