In a gripping semi-final contest in the 2024 National Science and Maths Quiz (NSMQ), Mfantsipim School clinched victory over Presbyterian Boys’ Secondary School (PRESEC-Legon) in a sudden-death tiebreaker, securing their place in the finals. Dubbed “the finals before the finals,” the intense showdown had both schools tied at 53 points after regular time, with Osei Tutu SHS trailing and exiting before the tie-breaker round.
The decisive moment came when Mfantsipim’s Peter Thompson rang the bell and answered the tie-breaker question correctly, sparking an eruption of celebration among their supporters at the SGS auditorium at the University of Cape Coast.
The journey to this moment was marked by fierce competition. Mfantsipim had previously eliminated five-time champions Prempeh College in the quarter-finals and entered the semi-finals determined to avenge their previous year’s defeat by PRESEC. The Botwe Boys initially led with 23 points, followed by PRESEC at 21 and Osei Tutu at 12. PRESEC then surged in the fourth round, momentarily taking the lead with 53 points, but Mfantsipim fought back, forcing the tiebreaker with an equal score.
The Botwe Boys’ victory denies PRESEC a shot at a ninth NSMQ trophy and positions Mfantsipim for a third championship, igniting hopes for a historic win in the finals.
