Mfantsipim School, known affectionately as “Botwe,” has won the 2024 National Science and Maths Quiz (NSMQ) in a stunning comeback, securing their third title by a single point in the final moments of the competition. The tense final round saw Mfantsipim edge out St. Augustine’s College (AUGUSCO) with a score of 47 to 46, while Keta Senior High School (KETASCO) finished with 32 points.
Throughout the contest, AUGUSCO maintained a slim lead until the fifth round, when Mfantsipim answered a crucial riddle to overtake them. This victory earned Mfantsipim an additional prize of GHC10,000 from Pepsodent for achieving the day’s highest score.
Mfantsipim’s triumph adds to their previous NSMQ victories in 1999 and 2014, having also reached the finals in 2000 and 2016. St. Augustine’s, a two-time champion with wins in 2007 and 2019, was close to capturing a third trophy but ultimately fell short in the final round.
KETASCO, known as the “Dzo Lalians,” entered the finals with strong momentum as the reigning Volta-Oti Zonal champions but could not surpass the intense competition from Mfantsipim and AUGUSCO. Their late-round push raised their score from 27 to 32 points, securing them a respectable third place.
