Former Assin Central MP Kennedy Agyapong has taken a jab at the U.S. court’s decision to reduce the $18 million defamation award against him to just $500, offering instead to pay investigative journalist Anas Aremeyaw Anas $5,000.

In a video making rounds on social media, Agyapong laughed off the ruling, saying, “Hahahaha! Maybe we have to give Anas five thousand,” while clapping and joking with onlookers.

His comment follows the recent U.S. federal court decision, which upheld a jury’s verdict that Agyapong had maliciously defamed Anas but slashed the damages from $18 million to $500, calling the original amount “excessive.”

The lawsuit was filed by Anas after Agyapong aired content that sought to discredit him. Although the jury found in Anas’ favor, Agyapong’s lawyers successfully argued for a dramatic reduction in the awarded sum.

Responding to the decision, Anas emphasized that his pursuit was never about financial compensation. “Our victory is in the judgment and not the award,” he said, adding that no allegations made against him by Agyapong were substantiated in court.

Anas has since announced plans to appeal the ruling, stating, “I will continue in my relentless fight against corruption, and in doing that, continue to name, shame, and jail.”
