A tragic building collapse in Sewua, Ashanti Region, has claimed the life of Kwaku Gyemfi, a mason in his early forties.
Gyemfi, the lead constructor on the site, was working with his assistant, an 18-year-old, on a two-story building when the incident occurred. Eyewitnesses reported that on July 17, 2024, Gyemfi went to the site to construct new pillars to support parts of the building showing cracks.
While they were working, Gyemfi’s assistant warned him about a section of the building falling in his direction. Unfortunately, Gyemfi was trapped as the structure collapsed on him.
The building, owned by Gyemfi’s brother-in-law, was initially started by another contractor before being handed over to Gyemfi for completion. Eyewitnesses noted that the team was trying to reinforce the structure with new pillars when the collapse happened.
Prince Kwame Adutwum, the assembly member of the area, confirmed that Gyemfi’s body has been retrieved and placed in the morgue.
