Private legal practitioner Martin Kpebu has been released by the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) after being detained earlier on Wednesday, December 3, a move that temporarily stalled planned questioning over corruption allegations he has levelled against Special Prosecutor Kissi Agyebeng.
He was freed on Wednesday evening after meeting the bail conditions set for him.
Kpebu, who had arrived at the OSP for an engagement with investigators, reportedly clashed with police officers at the entrance and was taken into custody before any interrogation could begin. Sources indicate that the Special Prosecutor could not proceed with questioning while he remained in detention.
He was subsequently granted bail, which required a landed property in his name as security. However, when his lawyer returned to complete the process, Kpebu could not immediately be located.
This latest development follows heightened tensions between Kpebu and the Special Prosecutor. The lawyer has consistently criticised the OSP’s investigative approach, accusing the office of procedural lapses and of assigning sensitive inquiries to junior officers who report directly to Mr. Agyebeng.
Before a previous meeting at the OSP, Kpebu stated that he would only cooperate if an independently constituted committee conducted the investigation, arguing that the current structure compromises fairness and integrity.
He has also raised concerns about the OSP’s handling of past cases, including the investigation involving former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta, which he claims suffered from procedural failings.
